For the blog this week, I will talk about an issue that I had put a star next to in my notebook, the idea behind the American flag while thinking about identity. It was kind of ironic that we discussed this issue this week, because last Saturday during the National Anthem at my basketball game, I was starring at the flag and thinking about the same issue of what the stars meant and the history of our flag. I find it embarrassing to admit, but I found myself counting the stars on the flag in the Tippit Gym, even though I obviously knew that there would be 50. I don’t know why I was counting, but it did make me think of the old flag of 13 stars, one for each of the first colony’s, and then compare it to the 50 now for each state. The progression of the flag has been through some changes, but still remains to be a constant reminder about identity and what it means to be an American. I wonder if as the country continues to develop, will the flag ever change from its present state? Will this current flag always be remembered and taught, or forgotten and fade into a memory? The identity the flag helps instill in each person also helps to show balance, a belief in something tangible, equality, patriotism, community, and other characteristics that always will be related to the American flag. People have the opportunity to show a belief or express an opinion about the flag because they live in this free country, and while it may cause some controversies at some point in time, the flag will always be there to affect and impact each and every person who looks at the stars and stripes.

It seems like it has been awhile since I have written one of these blogs! In class this week, we have continued to discuss the Declaration of Independence and on Thursday and Friday, we worked on a small timeline project for the Revolutionary War from the years 1775-1783. I have 1781 and have really enjoyed this project so far because I am able to just focus on my specific year and 6 important events that took place. By having my focus be on only this small of a time helps me understand in detail about what was going on. I am able to research more information about each specific event and use that knowledge to help me when adding them to the timeline. I find it pretty cool that the application we are using, Dipity, allows all of our class to be able to view and edit the same timeline. This one location has been useful in understanding the chronology of what was happening and the details provided help explain each occasion thoroughly. With doing the extra research required, I have found myself clicking on extra links that help me understand everything and the context in which it occurred.

While we have not gotten far on the Declaration of Independence, just barely halfway through the second point, I have very much valued our in depth discussions and the answers to questions thoroughly explained. We have a much better connection as to how everything is connected and what Thomas Jefferson and the other writers were trying to get across when they wrote this article. One topic discussed that grabbed my attention was the details about the government that we payed close attention to were conversations closely tied to the questions of “what would life be like without government,” or “what is the benefit versus danger of having an established government and leaders?” While I know that the government claims to give all people the same right, and say that each person is born equally, I completely disagree and think that the government or people who find some parts of the government to be fair and just, are being hypercritical and blind to reality. I do not everything about the government or the opinions of every individual in the nation; I do know that different aspects, such as socio-economics, race, gender, sexuality, or other factors can determine the rights people are given. People do not always judge others in a vocal or written way, but no matter the circumstance, they judge others subconsciously and use the qualities mentioned above in determining a decision or way of thinking.

This was another short week because of our test Monday and I was sick for class on Friday, but I think I will talk about the Boston Massacre today. We have discussed this event throughout the past two weeks and I found it so interesting that the people in Boston could stand up for themselves without being too violent. While five people did die, this was a simple act that really stood out to mean something by dumping the tea into the sea. I continue to compare this event to bold acts that take place now and how people of our day are more likely to revolt against their boss, leaders, or government in a more public and violent way. Many rebellions are measured in how crazy or out of control they get or how many people get hurt. Why does it have to be this way; why can’t a rebellion be judged more on the progress it makes and changes it causes to happen? I know that a more visual attack tends to leave a larger impression in most people’s minds, but why does this need to be the case? This concept goes back to the underlying cause of freedom. Because most rebellions take place when a group of people don’t feel they are being treated fairly and they want the freedom to be equals. What does it mean to be an equal and who can justify its events or effects of the certain outcome?

This was a very short week and due to special conflicts, we only met twice for history class. On Thursday, we began the class presentations and started to discuss chapter four. Anne and Martha did a good job on their project and one topic that I was very interested in was the idea about the Triangular Trade. Africa sold slaves to North and South America and received weapons from England in return. I have always been interested in the relationship between the people of each country and found this so interesting because each country benefits one another in specific ways. It is ironic that we discussed this yesterday because I have been attending different college visits this week and one topic that I may be interested in studying involves people and their relationship with one another. I have no idea what and how I would continue developing a career off of this path, but it is a major interest of mine as of now and I hope to continue learning about this at Laurel or through classes at college.

Today in class, we watched a movie and I learned a lot about the different topics that were discussed throughout the class. I found it interesting towards the end when it was said that there were only 8 Shakers left in the world. This was astonishing because it really made me think about topics that I have recently discussed in Environmental, such as sustainability and the ability to pass your genes into the next generation. That is the goal of plants and animals throughout the world and once these Shakers die, their culture will die with them. While we will always have the history and knowledge of the past, as these stories are withheld from others, and people continue to get older, the information will be altered and eventually forgotten.

Benjamin Franklin was a man full of accomplishments. Some of his discoveries included the idea of electricity, the founding of local hospitals and schools, which later became the University of Pennsylvania, bifocals, the Dewey decimal system, and many other inventions that impacted our world today. In his biography, there are many specifically important situations that help the readers understand certain values that Ben tries to express.

Throughout his story, Ben often directs that fact of money. Whether it is how much money someone has, how little money someone has, how the money should be spent between one another, or the division of the coins, money plays a large part throughout this story. I believe that Ben was trying to relate the idea of stability vs. uncertainty. With money brings the idea of stability, but also having to work towards your achievements and what you want. Ben was not handed everything throughout his life, but rather worked hard to be able to be recognized. He followed his dreams and did not give up. He had passions and ideas that if he would not have dared to pursue, he would not have been such an influential character of the time.

Another concept that Ben deals closely with is the idea of religion. He had originally been a Presbyterian, but later disagreed with that faith. However, throughout his time of uncertainty, Ben admits that he “never was without some religious principles” (62). I believe that Ben shares this information with his readers because he thinks that it is ok to go out and find something that breaks traditional views or from family values. Without truly going outside of your comfort zone and exploring, one might not know what they believe or where they will find peace. It was very brave of Ben to go after what he wanted and be sharing this piece. I believe that Ben helped share a little bit of courage to his readers, and hopefully offer inspiration to others.

On page, 64-65, Benjamin Franklin shares a list of 13 virtues and a small description of each. He then goes on to describe each virtue in detail and some examples of how he has tried to follow these throughout his life. These virtues include temperance, silence, order, resolution, frugality, industry, sincerity, justice, moderation, cleanliness, tranquility, chastity, and humility. Each one of these goals is an important aspect to live by and Ben was completely honest when he decided to share these ideas with his readers. Whenever someone opens themselves up, they have the opportunity to share something significant, but also the door to failure is opened. Ben was willing to fail, but by having goals set out from the beginning, he was able to take part in growing from either the virtue itself, or the lesson that came with the virtue.

A fourth lesson was on page 100 with the comparison between men and women. Ben admits that “if that feeble woman could sweep such a street in three hours, a strong, active man might have done o tom half the time” (100). The comparison here is obviously one that has lasted throughout time and I believe that Ben shared this quote because he wanted his readers to understand the then thought about idea that men were stronger, in many ways, than women. During this time, it would be weak for a man to be outworked by a woman, or for a man to come across as less superior than the weaker sex. Ben wanted to feel accomplished and strong and show his sex had the power over women. This biography was interesting and while it was a little difficult to get into, I enjoyed reader it more as time went on. It definitely helped offer incite towards Benjamin Franklin and made me think about what he was trying to tell to his readers.

First off, I would just like to say that the topics covered in classes are so closely related at Laurel and I really enjoy this. I like learning about the Puritans and at the same time reading about Hester Prynne and her actions in the Scarlet Letter. Hester was a Puritan woman who committed adultery and had a child and was punished by having to wear a red letter “A” sewn onto her chest, to have others see the visible sign of the sin she has committed. It is interesting to learn about the culture of the Puritans through two separate ways. While there are overlaps in the information, the lessons in each class can offer different knowledge and personal connections.

Although we talked about the 3 E’s and the Indians more last week, I thought I would go a little further into this topic. I found it so interesting the differences between the different cultures of the Spanish, Dutch and French, and the English people. The Spanish wanted to exploit the Indians, the French and Dutch wanted to exchange with the Indians, and the English wanted to exterminate the Indians. These three significant differences are all equally as bad in my opinion. All of these foreign people came over while exploring and had their own visions of what to do to the land and the people on it. They did not live in peace and freedom with one another, which made me think about how presently, many cultures argue over things that just should be shared or a compromise created. There are people around the world and in the United States that are prejudice or feel strongly about certain races, religions, genders, and the question is: when will this prejedice stop? Its been going on for so long that some people in my generation have just grown up with these beliefs and have a hard time forming their own opinions, and going against what they were raised with. Hopefully, there will begin to be a significant changes so that this prejedice of people can change forever.

My class had some great conversations this week. I am not really sure what I am going to talk about this week, so I think I will just begin with the packet we received. For homework, I enjoyed reading White Servitude by Richard Hofstadter. I found this article very interesting and an up-close explanation of the matter dealing with indentured servants. I learned a lot while reading and the way it was explained helped show a more personal view of the concept and go into great detail. I look forward to finishing the last couple of pages of the article and see what else Hofstadter has to say.

I found it interesting with how 2/3 of the settlers came over to the New World as indentured servants and work for 5-7 years, and then be given their freedom. But, didn’t many of them get in dept and have to constantly owe something to their master? How was this the sought after dream life of having freedom? They were not free and because many people did not even live their term of labor was up, how did the people in England continue to agree to come to the New World? Wouldn’t they see what was going on, or again, be hidden from the truth, like I discussed last week. How did no one try to change the way or succeed in altering how the indentured servant process worked?

One conversation that we went into on Wednesday (maybe) included how indentured servants were still brought over to America today. I learned and was astonished to find that Chinese men were a large number of people included in this group. And the more our conversation developed, I thought about how much trust the Chinese and people during the 17th century had to have had and how they did what they did for their families and a better life. They yearn to live the dream life, and will go through almost anything, to receive a place in it. They want to be accepted into our world and culture, and it makes me realize how lucky, yet oblivious people of my generation are to our surroundings. Many young people do not know or fully understand everything that is going on in the world and I think that it is necessary for them to be taught all aspects during school. I agree with how Laurel tries to teach us all areas of history because as it is always stated, we are the future. If stories or facts are not continuous told or recorded, they will be forgotten or never talked about again.

As the weeks go on in this class, I find our discussions to be more and more interesting. With starting chapter 2 today, I really liked the visual aid of the packet passed out and I feel that this is going to help me follow each event and its details more carefully. I liked learning more about the conquest the English had over the Irish and as soon as it was brought up, I realized how careful certain areas are about sharing history, because they do not want to make themselves or country look bad. We are not taught the entire history and are placed in a box and hidden from the truth. I feel that this needs to be changed and al aspects of an issue need to be shared with future generations so they can form their own opinion and not just follow the one set in front of them.

During the reading of chapter 2 in Give Me Liberty, the section titled “Changes in the Land,” had a very unique topic and discussed many points that I had never thought about. I knew that the settlers affected Indian life, but I enjoyed having each specific example laid out. “Pigs and cattle roamed freely, trampling Indian cornfields and gardens” (54) really illustrated how the new advantages helped ruin existing way of life. Another interesting topic shared was “the need for wood to build and heat homes and export to England depleted forests on which Indians relied for hunting” (54). I never fully thought about this issue until I read this paragraph and after I was done reading it, I thought more about other ways of which the English could have been a threat to the Indians survival. I enjoyed having something I read in the book, help me expand my ideas further and not just ignore my own thoughts.

I have greatly enjoyed KAP US History so far this year. These past two weeks show that this course is going to be challenging, yet rewarding with the amount of information that I will be learning and getting to experience. Today in class, we closely looked at the word “freedom” and what it meant for the Indians versus the Europeans to be free. Each of these groups had their own ideas about freedom. The Indians did not have many rules, yet they still followed a chief, while the Europeans had rules laid out and repercussions if they did not follow their authority. Freedom is defined from dictionary.com as “the power to determine action without restraint.” I find this interesting because the Europeans marketed themselves as being free men, yet according to the definition, were not because of the set forms society made them be apart of. So what is freedom? Who is entitled to enjoy its benefits? Or its disadvantages? Because of how freedom was defined by dictionary.com, and how the Indians had more of a medieval way of living, rather than modern, doesn’t this show an example of how the Indians were free compared to the settlers? Yet why were they forced off of their own land and intimidated by the whites, who were seen as superior?

Towards the end of our discussion today we talked more about freedom dealing with religion and how it was related to authority. We have a very secular society and vastly separate church and state. I really enjoyed talking about how the wealth of a person depends on ownership of land and hearing examples about how and when the land was passed on to the child. It helped me understand WHY the society of wealth causes so much friction. Our discussions so far have really helped show me about the similarities of the past, yet also the continuing of evolution and how our world will be tomorrow. People from all societies, cultures, and ways of life will continue to change and develop for future ideas and ways.
